Terms of service

Terms of Service

By using julesandnini.com or subscribing to Jules & Nini, you're agreeing to these terms. They're written in plain language because legal documents shouldn't require a law degree to understand.

Nini: Jules tried to use the word "hereinafter."
Jules: I was joking.
Nini: You typed it. I watched you type it.
Jules: And then I deleted it.
Nini: After I gave you The Look.
Jules: …After she gave me The Look.

What You're Subscribing To

Jules & Nini is a monthly chapter subscription. For $12 per month, you receive a serialized story co-written by a real mother and daughter (that's us), mailed to your door in a hand-addressed envelope. Each monthly mailing includes the chapter, Chapter Notes sharing the real memories behind the fiction, a Letter of Inspiration from Jules, and a community access card.

Subscriptions renew automatically each month until you cancel. We'll charge the payment method on file at the start of each billing cycle.

Your Account

You're responsible for keeping your account information accurate — especially your mailing address. If your chapter goes to your old apartment because the address wasn't updated, that one's on you. But email us and we'll do our best to make it right.

Please don't share your account credentials. Your subscription is for one household.

Nini: If your sister wants in, she can get her own. Tell her. Tell your mother. Tell your book club. Tell the woman at the hair salon who always asks what you're reading.
Jules: This is a Terms of Service, Mom. Not a sales pitch.
Nini: Everything is a sales pitch if you believe in what you're selling.
Jules: I'm going to pretend that isn't the smartest thing anyone has said in a legal document.

Our Content

Everything on our website and in our mailings — the stories, the Chapter Notes, the Letters of Inspiration, the design, the photography, and yes, even these policies — belongs to Focus On It, LLC DBA Jules and Nini.

You're welcome to share a quote on social media, recommend us enthusiastically to everyone you know, and read your chapter aloud at book club. We hope you do.

What we ask you not to do: please don't scan, photograph, photocopy, digitize, or distribute our chapters in any form. The whole point of Jules & Nini is that the story lives on paper — in your hands, not on a screen. Turning it into a PDF and texting it to your group chat doesn't just violate our copyright. It takes away the very thing that makes this different from everything else you could be reading. If someone in your life needs this story, the kindest thing you can do is give them a subscription of their own.

Nini: If I find out someone photocopied our book, I will find them.
Jules: She means metaphorically.
Nini: I mean I will get in my car, Jules.
Jules: Mom—
Nini: With a casserole. And I will sit at their kitchen table until they understand why what they did was wrong.
Jules: I want to be clear that we would pursue this through normal legal channels.
Nini: You can pursue the legal channels. I'll bring the casserole.

The short version: enjoy it, share the love, keep it on paper.

Our Community

Subscribers may be invited to join our private community space. Be kind there. Be generous. Be the sort of person Jules and Nini would want at their dinner table. We reserve the right to remove anyone who makes the space less welcoming for others.

Nini: My dinner table rule: if you wouldn't say it to someone's face while passing the potatoes, don't say it online.

Pricing

Our current subscription price is $12 per month. If we ever change our pricing, we'll give you advance notice, and any change will apply only to future billing cycles — never retroactively.

Nini: Twelve dollars. That's less than lunch.
Jules: You always say that.
Nini: Because it's always true. Have you bought lunch lately?

What We Promise

We promise to send you a chapter every month. We promise to put care into every page. We promise the stamp will be real, the envelope will be hand-addressed, and the story will be worth your time. If we ever fall short of that, we want to hear about it.

What We Don't Promise

We don't promise the website will never go down, that the mail will never be late (take that up with the Post Office), or that you'll agree with every plot twist. We provide this service "as is," which is legal language meaning we're doing our best and we stand behind it, but we can't guarantee perfection.

Nini: I guarantee the plot twists are good. Jules is a very talented writer.
Jules: Mom, you're not supposed to compliment me in the legal documents.
Nini: I'm supposed to compliment you everywhere. I'm your mother. It's in my contract.
Jules: You don't have a contract.
Nini: It's implied. Look it up.

Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Focus On It, LLC DBA Jules and Nini's total liability for any claim related to our service is limited to the amount you've paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim. We're a small family operation sending stories by mail. We're not in the business of causing harm, and we trust you're not either.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maine. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of Cumberland County, Maine.

Nini: Which, incidentally, is a lovely place to visit if you ever need a reason.
Jules: Are you inviting people who are suing us to come enjoy Portland?
Nini: I'm saying that if someone has to go to court, they might as well get lobster after. I'm being hospitable, Jules. It's called grace under pressure.

Changes

We may update these terms as our business evolves. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know by email. Continued use of the site or service after changes take effect means you're good with the new terms.

Contact

For anything related to these terms, reach us at hello@julesandnini.com or by mail at PO Box 472, Cumberland, ME 04021-0472. We read every message.

Nini: If you write something really nice, I might write back personally. In actual handwriting. On actual paper. With a stamp.
Jules: And that, right there, is why people subscribe.
