Privacy policy
Privacy Policy
We know. Nobody reads these. But you're here, which means you're either very thorough or very bored. Either way, we like you already.
You're trusting us with your mailing address, your email, and your credit card information. We don't take that lightly. Here's exactly what we collect, why, and what we do with it.
Nini: I wanted to write "We're not crooks" and leave it at that.
Jules: And I explained that a four-word privacy policy would not satisfy the Federal Trade Commission.
Nini: Well, it should. It covers everything.
Who We Are
Jules & Nini is a monthly chapter subscription operated by Focus On It, LLC DBA Jules and Nini, based in Cumberland, Maine. When we say "we," "us," or "our," we mean Focus On It, LLC DBA Jules and Nini. When we say "you," we mean the person reading this. Our website is julesandnini.com.
What We Collect
Your name and mailing address. Because we're mailing you a chapter every month. By actual mail. With an actual stamp. We cannot do this without knowing where you live. We promise to use this information exclusively to send you things you've asked us to send you.
Your email address. So we can send you a welcome message, let you know your chapter is on its way, and occasionally share something we think you'd enjoy. We will not flood your inbox. Jules is a real person who checks this email, and she would be embarrassed to send you junk.
Your payment information. Processed securely through Shopify Payments (powered by Stripe). We never see, store, or handle your full credit card number. It goes straight to people whose entire job is keeping that information safe.
Nini: I asked Jules what Stripe was. She said it's the company that processes the payment. I said, "Is it a real company?" She said, "Mom, they process payments for Amazon." I said, "You could have led with that."
Your browsing and device information. When you visit our website, certain information is collected automatically — your IP address, browser type, device type, which pages you visit, and how you got here. This is standard for virtually every website on the internet. We use this to understand how people find us and to make the experience better.
Cookies. Our website uses cookies — small files stored on your device — to keep things running properly, remember your cart, and help us understand traffic patterns. Some of these cookies are placed by Shopify, which hosts our website.
Nini: I don't trust cookies on a computer. I only trust cookies on a plate.
Jules: Noted, Mom.
Nini: Preferably oatmeal raisin.
Jules: Nobody asked.
Nini: Somebody should have.
What We Don't Do
We do not sell your information. Not your name, not your address, not your email, not anything. Ever. To anyone. For any reason.
We do not rent your information. We do not trade your information. We do not share your mailing list with "carefully selected partners." We don't have partners. We have subscribers. And we respect the difference.
Nini: If I found out someone sold your address, I would show up at their office with a casserole and a speech. The casserole is how I get past the front desk. The speech is why they'd wish I hadn't.
Jules: This is not hypothetical. She has done this. To a car dealership.
Nini: They stopped calling.
Who We Share Information With
Only the services that help us run Jules & Nini, and only the minimum they need to do their job:
Shopify — hosts our website and processes orders. Shopify also collects certain data about your visit independently, including browsing behavior and device information, in order to provide and improve its platform. Shopify processes this data under its own privacy policy, which you can review at privacy.shopify.com.
Stripe (via Shopify Payments) — securely processes your payment.
Klaviyo — sends our emails. If you've given us your email, it lives here.
Appstle — manages your subscription (billing cycles, renewals, cancellations).
These services have their own privacy policies, and we've chosen them because they're reputable and secure. Your information may be processed or stored on servers located outside of the state or country where you reside, as is standard for cloud-based services.
Advertising and Tracking
We are not in the advertising business. We don't run targeted ads, we don't build behavioral profiles, and we don't sell your browsing data to marketers.
However, because our website is hosted on Shopify, certain platform features may involve the sharing of browsing data with third parties for advertising purposes. Depending on where you live, this may qualify as a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information under state privacy laws (such as the California Consumer Privacy Act). If you'd like to opt out of this, you can do so through Shopify's privacy preferences, accessible via the link in the footer of our website, or by visiting privacy.shopify.com.
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we will honor it automatically for your device and browser.
Nini: Jules spent twenty minutes explaining targeted advertising to me. I said, "So the internet follows you around and shows you things you already looked at?" She said yes. I said, "That's not advertising. That's a stalker."
Jules: And technically she's not wrong.
Your Choices and Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights regarding your personal information:
Unsubscribe from emails anytime using the link at the bottom of every email we send. We won't make it hard to find.
Cancel your subscription anytime through your subscriber portal, or by emailing hello@julesandnini.com. More on this in our Cancellation Policy.
Request access to your data — if you want to know exactly what we have on file, email us and we'll tell you.
Request correction — if any information we have about you is inaccurate, let us know and we'll fix it.
Request deletion — if you want us to delete your information entirely, we will.
Opt out of data sharing for advertising — through Shopify's privacy controls as described above.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@julesandnini.com. We'll respond within 30 days, and we'll never discriminate against you for exercising your rights. We may need to verify your identity before processing certain requests.
Nini: And we'll be very mature about it.
Jules: We will.
Nini: Even though it would be nice if people appreciated—
Jules: Mom. Mature. We just said.
Data Retention
We keep your information for as long as you're an active subscriber, and for a reasonable period afterward in case you decide to come back or in case we need it to fulfill legal or accounting obligations. Once your information is no longer needed for any of these purposes, we delete it.
If you request deletion, we'll remove your personal information from our systems, with the exception of anything we're legally required to retain (such as transaction records for tax purposes). Shopify and our other service providers may retain certain data according to their own retention policies.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. Our website is hosted on Shopify's secure infrastructure, and payments are processed through Stripe's PCI-compliant systems. That said, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please don't send sensitive information like credit card numbers via email — use the secure checkout on our website instead.
Third-Party Links
Our website may contain links to other websites that we don't own or control — for example, links to Shopify's privacy portal or to our social media profiles. We're not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. If you click a link that takes you somewhere else, their rules apply, not ours. We encourage you to read their policies too, if you're the thorough type.
Children
Jules & Nini is currently a story written for adults, and our website is not designed for or directed at anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we'll remove it promptly. As of the date of this policy, we do not have actual knowledge that we share or sell the personal information of individuals under 16 years of age.
That said — Nini was a special education teacher for thirty years, and getting kids excited about reading is something we care deeply about. We'd love nothing more than to one day create something that gets younger readers excited about finding a story in their mailbox too. Stay tuned.
Nini: I have very strong feelings about children and reading.
Jules: She does. If you have four hours, ask her about it.
Nini: It doesn't take four hours.
Jules: It has never once taken less than four hours.
Changes to This Policy
If we ever make meaningful changes to this policy, we'll let you know by email before they take effect. We won't quietly rewrite the rules on you.

Nini: It's Jules. I'm not allowed near the email after The Incident.
Jules: We agreed never to discuss The Incident publicly.
Nini: I replied to a subscriber and accidentally CC'd—
Jules: MOM.
Nini: Fine. But it turned out fine. She thought it was funny.
Jules: She did not think it was funny.
